Bowling is not boring

032020027

Bowling is not boring especially when you bowl at Pinz in Milford, MA.  Pinz is not only great for kids but for adults too.  Amongst the neon flashing lights and fun music, Pinz has a full service menu laneside at your bowling table, and yes that does include full bar service.

We headed to Pinz after school Friday for Alex’s 10th birthday party. We didn’t do the whole party package becuase on Friday afternoon it is only $5 per person (including shoes) to bowl for one hour. We ordered pizza, which is very good by the way, buffalo wings  didn’t get ay of those because the 10 year old boys inhaled them all and nachos which lacked in the cheese department. The pizza is great and at $10 a pie it is an affordable night out.

Everyone can bowl together at Pinz. They had a computerized bumper system which will put the bumpers up or down depending on who is bowling. The people at the counter will assign the bumpers by bowler if you ask.

Pinz also has a large arcade, which is $1.00 per game plus you have to buy a card to swipe in the arcade machines for $1.00 so we avoided that and  a laser tag which is $5.00 for per person for 5 minutes, you can guess with 9 kids we avoided that too.

After and hour worth of bowling and stuffing our faces all children were completely content and were even happy just to look at the arcade and not play.

Head on over to Pinz in Milford for something the whole family can enjoy together. Make sure to check the Pinz website for other deals on bowling, this weekend for example they have a Memorial Day special that runs all weekend.

Volvo Race from a Greenhorn Sailor

113

Hi everyone, it’s Zack.

The best thing about the Volvo Ocean Race, was “The Ride”.  It was so cool.  We were sliding all over the place.  I would try and raise the sails too.  That was fun even though Alex beat me.  My dad and Jill tried to.  It was funny to watch.  I really liked looking at the boats.  My favorite was team Puma.

I would go back.  Oh, yeah the nice lady in the food place gave us a free cookie.

Last Extreme Sport on the Planet

Volvo Ocean RaceGrinding Getting ready for GalwayPushIn front of the fleet

Hey everyone, Chris here tonight.  Tonight all six of us checked out the Boston stop over of the Volvo Ocean Race at Fan Pier.  The event, and all activities in the village are free.  Food, well that’s a different story and I’ll touch on that later.

First, a little about the race.  These crews of 11 are racing 70 foot carbon fiber masterpieces of technology.  They are gorgeous.  These boats and crew started this grueling journey last October in Alicante Spain and will finish in June in St. Petersburg Russia after having traveled 37,000 nautical miles and sailing for over 2,600 hours at speeds in excess of 30 knots.

There is ample parking in the area.  Prices range is around 10-12 dollars.  We lucked out and found a spot on the street.

We started our visit with a trip to The Dome where we watched a great film which provided a fantastic overview of the race and it’s history.  The film was about 9 minutes long.  Next up: The Ride.  This short, under 5 minute sailing simulator ride was a hit with the boys and had some amazing extreme sailing footage.  Watch out for that ocean spray as you break through a swell!

Next up was a real workout.  The grinders on these boats exert an amazing amount of energy to put up and trim the sails on this tremendous boats.  Well, you can take a turn and see how quickly you can get that sail raised.  Be careful, it starts out pretty easy, but once you get close to the finish, you really need to work it.  Jill and I went head to head and so did Alex and Zack, who eventually needed help from their little brothers :)

Harder than it looks boys!

Harder than it looks boys!

After all of the interactive stuff, we made are way over to check out the 8 boats.  WOW!  I think it was unanimous.  They are massive and very impressive even when tied to the pier.  Menacing and beautiful at the same time.

At this point, little mouths needed to be fed so we sucked it up and hit the food tent.  People were very nice and the selection was pretty good.  Pricing wise, I guess it is what you would expect for a venue like this.  $67 for the six of us: 4 hot dogs, chips, drinks, 2 sandwiches, 2 cokes and 4 waters.  Oh well.  Our suggestion is to bring a cooler/picnic lunch as there was no one checking bags.  You could either eat at some of the picnic tables or on the grass or seawall along the Harbor Walk.

There are pavilions sponsored by Volvo, Ericsson and Puma and Tourism Ireland.  There are some great bands scheduled to play this weekend at the Ireland Waterfront Festival which runs Friday to Saturday and is serving as a kickoff to the leg 7 which will see the boats race to Galway.  We checked out the Puma pavilion which was ok and contained the only shop where you could purchase race related stuff.

All in all, this is a great family event at a great venue.  It was a beautiful night.  I would give a 4 out of 5.

The Village is open: Thursday, Friday  and Saturday from 10:00am t0 12:00 am.  The start of Leg 7 is Saturday from 12pm – 2:30pm.  Have fun.  We highly recommend this one!  Check out the Volvo Ocean Race Boston site  for the schedule and all the details.

Description: Musical theatre combines many different dance forms and acting techniques to communicate a story through music and movement. From “A Chorus Line” to “Oklahoma!” and “West Side Story” to “Rent” – each musical’s songs and dances have become part of our modern dance vocabulary. Famous choreographers such as Agnes de Mille, Bob Fosse, and Jerome Robbins have reinvented musical theatre dance to fit the story they are trying to tell.

This special Master Class, a preview of Boston Ballet School’s Summer Dance Workshop offering, will begin with a ballet warm-up (the base vocabulary and movement for all dance styles) and will move on to explore how actors communicate through song and dance. We will finish with learning two different dance styles from Broadway shows.

Chickens Aren’t the Only Ones

IMG_2890 - Copy

Hi everyone, I’m Alex and I’m one the kids that gets to go to all these places and then tell you what I think.

Did you know that chickens aren’t the only ones that lay eggs? It’s true!  A nice man at the Harvard Museum of Natural History read us “New England Kids” a cool book called Chickens Aren’t the Only Ones.  It was about a bunch of animals that lay eggs. Then after he read the book he showed us the largest turtle in the world. Turtles also lay eggs, they lay their eggs under the sand. I even looked inside its shell and my Mom snapped a picture. Then, we saw a 42 foot real dinosaur skeleton and got to hold dinosaur egg shells. So now I know that chickens aren’t the only ones that lay eggs.
I personally, would give the museum a 5 out of 5 rating. I think it’s good for kids to go there because there are hands on exhibits, fun and cool rocks and crystals. There are also some videos about the solar system and birds that I thought were really interesting. The only bad thing is the glass plants that are more for boring adults.

Lions, Dodo Birds and Beetles Oh My!

img_28871img_28891

On Sunday we packed up the mini van and headed from Franklin into Cambridge on the Mass Pike, this is a big trip to the city for us suburbanites as we are accustomed to strip malls and movie theatres. The ride was not bad at all and the Pike dropped us of just a few miles from our destination: The Harvard Museum of Natural History. All four boys had high hopes as they are fans of the Night at the Museum movie and thought this was sure to be the local version of the movie.  I was skeptical but thought hey its free before noon on Sundays to Massachusetts residents so why not give it a try. We arrived just about 11:30 am and we were worried about parking and getting in under the free wire.  Chris dropped us off and went to park the car. He found on spot on a street just a few blocks away.

The staff was very helpful when we arrived and directed us to the third floor. We spent some time at first looking at metoerites, gemstones, and talking about how climate is changing or not changing our Earth. Some of the movies were a little advanced for even the older boys (10 and9) but we enjoyed looking and even touching real space debris and that is cool to boys! We imagined what it would be liked to stand there as the meteor fell to the ground and were thankful one hasn’t landed on our head.

We then ventured into the room full of bugs, I mean insects. There we learned there is a difference between bugs and insects. We hooked up with Alice, a museum volunteer, who gladly took the boys and gave them a 2 hour tour around the entire museum. Alice was happy to teach the boys about classifications and species of beetles, show  them the size of an elephant bird egg, talk about how animals camouflage themselves, and all the different types of animals at the museum on display. We touched the skull of a deer, saw live poisonous tree frogs, found out that whales have the same arm bones as humans, and who could forget the 42 foot skeleton of a dinosaur!

After Alice we headed for story time in the dinosaur room where another great museum volunteer read a story about chickens and eggs and how they relate to dinosaurs.  After the story, he walked  the  group of children through the museum where we found out that hippos have four toes and rhinos have only three. Bet you didn’t know that!

We were absolutley amazed at the museum and how much fun it was. All four boys had a great time and we highly recommend this museum for kids 6 and up. It would even be fantastic for adults.

Tips: 9am to noon on Sundays are free!

Our New England Kids rating  4 out of 5 stars
